'You took evasive action, almost to no avail.'

Many people despise speed cameras, they see them as a money making device for the government. You happen to agree with one of their sentiments, the money making part. Personally you think that the speed cameras should just give out points to those who speed, forget the fine; just put the points on the speeder's license. Then the 'money making' point would be on a hiding to nothing.

There is a problem with speed cameras however; they do not catch the drivers on mobile phones, the drivers who drive dangerously, carelessly and inconsiderately. The driver's who pull out on people without looking (see below), the drivers who accelerate on their fellow motorists who are overtaking them, the road rage incidents and many more problems.

An incident happened to you a few weeks ago, one that will never be sorted out, or at least not as you know it. You were traveling down a dual carriageway at approximately 70 mph, overtaking vehicles safely and according to the Highway Code. As you were about to overtake a people carrier it pulled out on you, no warning and no signal. You took evasive action, almost to no avail, but managed to bring your car down to a slow speed as not to crash into the vehicle. Later on one of your passengers told you that the woman driving the people carrier was actually leaning over into the back and shouting at her children, or something to the same effect.

You were doing something perfectly legal and safe, and this motorist made it dangerous. She can continue doing this; unchecked and unpunished, until one day she may cause an accident or a death.

The only way to stop these people is to put more Police on the roads, not to put up more speed cameras. They punish speeders and rightly so, but not dangerous, inconsiderate and careless drivers.

What an excellent analogy about everything that annoys us about the police force today. You have a great case, you might be harassed to death and threatened (take my case against the criminal ripperologists) or you might be staggering into the bl**dy reception with a knife in your side, and the system tells you it's not in the public interest at the end of the day because the offenders, laughing their heads off, dropped the knife or the phone handle or whatever on their right foot instead of their left.

Enough flipping excuses and get on with crime solving instead of protocol and lazing about.
